Bad Veins Get Murderer a Reprieve on Execution

A convicted murderer got a 1-week reprieve on his Ohio death sentence after his veins were found unsuitable for execution by lethal injection, the method required by state law, Reuters reports. "This is uncharted territory for us," said prison spokeswoman Julie Walburn.

Science has addressed the challenge of giving shots before. A company called Luminetx developed the VeinViewer to shine harmless near-infrared light onto the skin. The light photons are absorbed by red blood cells inside vessels but bounced back by surrounding tissue, making veins visible.

And for anyone squeamish about injections, researchers recently designed a Band-Aid-like painless patch that could replace the sting of shots.
