Summer Stargazing 2026: The best celestial events this season (and how to see them)

Explore the wonders of the Northern Hemisphere’s night sky from June to August 2026, including a total solar eclipse, Perseids and a morning planetary lineup.

On a clear night, the sky looks like a blanket of stars, but there is no blanket — just depth. You can see the bright stars and constellations with your naked eyes, go star-hopping with binoculars and get a close-up of planets and nebulas with a telescope.

Although the summer nights are short, there are still plenty of things worth looking at in the night sky. And this summer, we're being treated to a spectacular sky-show consisting of a total solar eclipse, the Perseids meteor shower peak and a planetary lineup — all on the same night of August 12.

Here are the best sights to see after dark this summer, and the gear you'll need to see them.

Summer Stargazing 2026

Total Solar Eclipse

August 12's total solar eclipse will be visible across much of Europe and parts of northeastern USA and Canada.

By far the biggest event of summer 2026 is the total solar eclipse on Wednesday, August 12. The path of totality will make its way across Spain, Iceland and Greenland, with much of Europe seeing a very deep partial eclipse — up to 93% in parts of the UK.

But that doesn't mean the US will miss out entirely. Parts of the northeastern USA and eastern Canada will be able to see a partial solar eclipse, although it won't amount to much more than around 27%, at most. You can check the TimeAndDate website to see if the eclipse will be visible in your city.

You must NEVER look at a partial solar eclipse without eye protection. You'll need a pair of solar eclipse glasses or solar binoculars to observe the sun safely. If you have the budget for it, a smart telescope with a solar filter is a fantastic, easy way to capture the eclipse straight to your smartphone.

Perseids Meteor Shower

August 12-13 is shaping up to be a pretty unforgettable night, as the peak of the Perseids meteor shower perfectly coincides with the solar eclipse and new moon.

The best viewing time will be between 2 am to 4 am local time, when Perseus is highest in the sky. Plus, if you're already in a dark sky area, you can also gaze at the Milky Way and use your binoculars to find some of the other constellations and asterisms in this list.

You don't need any special gear to see the Perseids. In fact, they're actually best seen with just your eyes. However, astrophotographers will want to ensure they have the appropriate wide-angle lens to capture them.

Planetary Lineup

As if a solar eclipse and meteor shower wasn't enough, the morning of August 13 will also be the best night to see a six-planet lineup in the pre-dawn hours. But there's a small caveat, in that you'll only be able to see four of them with the naked eye.

Saturn rises from the east between 10 pm to 11 pm, with Mars following suit at around 2 am. Jupiter and Mercury are both quite close to the sun, so they'll be visible just before sunrise, which will be the best time to see all of the planets at the same time. Neptune (in Pisces) and Uranus (in Taurus, near the Pleiades) are also there, but you'll need a telescope to get any meaningful observations.

But don't panic if you don't get to see them on August 13. This night is the peak which coincides with the new moon for the darkest skies, but the lineup will still be around until late August (which will provide better morning visibility for Mercury and Jupiter as the sunrise gets later).

Partial Lunar Eclipse

While the USA will miss out on the best of the solar eclipse, much of North and South America will see a deep partial lunar eclipse two weeks later on the night of August 27-28. Although it's technically only a partial eclipse, we'll still get around 93% coverage, and this one is at a somewhat reasonable time of night, starting at around 9.30 pm (check for your time zone), lasting for roughly 5 and a half hours.

Rise of A Full Moon

The sight of a full moon rising above the eastern horizon during dusk is a monthly highlight for sky-watchers and astrophotographers. On June 30 (Strawberry Moon), July 29 (Buck Moon) and August 28 (Sturgeon Moon), research the exact time of moonrise for your location and look east a few minutes after.

Be patient — it will appear — but it may take a touch longer if you have anything but an ocean horizon. It’s important to catch it at moonrise to see it glow a beautiful orange color.

The Summer Triangle and the Milky Way

If you’re under dark skies this summer in the Northern Hemisphere, you can’t miss the Milky Way streaming towards the southern horizon through the vast Summer triangle of three bright stars — Vega in the constellation Lyra, Deneb in Cygnus and Altair in Aquila. Even if light pollution hides the arc of the galaxy from you, you can still see rich starfields and nebula just by dragging your binoculars across the Summer Triangle, particularly between Deneb at the top-left and Altair closer to the horizon.

While summer is the peak viewing time due to the triangle being in its highest position in the sky, it remains visible throughout the fall and low in the western sky on early winter evenings as well.

The Coathanger Cluster

The Milky Way might stream through the Summer Triangle from Deneb to Altair, but go from Altair up to Vega, and you’ll see something a lot more subtle in a pair of binoculars. The Coathanger, also called Brocchi’s Cluster, is a small but obvious pattern of 10 stars in the shape of the household object. It’s easy to find, thanks to its placement against a relatively empty patch of the night sky.

The Dolphin

Delphinus is an unmistakable shape of stars close to the Summer Triangle.

Here’s another small asterism close to the Summer Triangle that few know, but once you’ve explored it with your binoculars, you’ll forever see it with your naked eyes. The core of Delphinus, “The Dolphin,” is a diamond shape of four stars, but the marine animal quickly reveals itself. Altair in Aquila is once again the starting point; sweep your binoculars away from the Summer Triangle towards the Great Square of Pegasus, an unmissable shape of four bright stars. Delphinus is about halfway between the two.

The Arrow

It may be one of the smallest of the 88 official constellations in the night sky, but Sagitta, “The Arrow,” is a must-see for binocular observers. Not to be confused with the much more prominent Sagittarius, Sagitta is a simple pattern of four stars. It’s found close to the constellation Aquila; locate the bright star Altair in the Summer Triangle and look slightly above it.

Noctilucent Clouds

Come late June's solstice, those in the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere struggle for astronomical darkness. However, the sun not going far enough below the horizon to create full darkness does have an advantage.

Web-like noctilucent or "space" clouds form around 80 kilometers (50 miles) up in the mesosphere, are composed of tiny ice crystals on meteor dust high in Earth's atmosphere, and can often be seen late at night in northern skies in June and July. Their eerie structure, reflecting sunlight at the edge of space, looks fabulous in binoculars.

Venus in the Evening Sky

Venus reaches its greatest eastern elongation on August 15, and will still be visible in the evening sky after sunset up until late September/early October.

It'll reach its greatest brilliancy of magnitude -4.8 on September 18, but it'll set around an hour after sunset. It's best seen with the naked eye, but a small telescope will reveal its phases.

The Great Globular Cluster

At its best in July is this famous globular cluster — a dense ball of as many as half a million ancient stars that are almost as old as the universe itself. Also called M13 and appearing as a fuzzy patch in a pair of binoculars (the bigger, the better), first find Hercules's keystone — four stars forming a diamond shape between the bright stars Vega and Arcturus.

It's visible somewhere in the sky every month of the year, but it's at its highest during the summer months and is visible all night long from dusk until dawn.
