7 Evils that Scar Society

In Britain, they just get right out there with things. Case in point:

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation surveyed 3,500 people to generate this list of seven evils that are scourges on British society. The list:

  • Greed
  • Collapsing moral values
  • Decline of old-fashioned virtues such as honesty and tolerance
  • The abuse of drink and drugs,
  • The permanence of poverty,
  • Failure of political institutions
  • Breakdown of the family is also a scourge that deeply worries most of the population, the group said.

As we all know, bad habits are hard to break. And if you think society in Britain (or elsewhere) is suddenly going down the toilet, well, know that these sorts of problems are not new — only the specific choices that top the list are. The foundation's namesake, Joseph Rowntree, developed the first such list in 1904. His peeves then: poverty, war, slavery, intemperance, the opium trade, impurity and gambling.

In your mind, what's missing from the 2009 list of 7 evils?
