Reports of UFOs go way back. The first reported alien abduction in the United States was in 1961. Conspiracy theories have long accused the U.S. government of covering all this up. NASA and other government agencies usually stay out of these things.
But when an astronaut thinks there are UFOs, NASA has to speak up.
An Apollo astronaut claims that the truth about extraterrestrial life has been buried in a cover-up by the U.S. and other governments. Former NASA astronaut Edgar Mitchell spoke on Monday at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., where he urged that humankind go out and become part of the wider planetary community. Mitchell also talked about the supposed UFO crash in his hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, and said that an unnamed admiral had confirmed the incident but now denied it.
It's not the first time Mitchell has made this accusation, and he also believes in mystics and psychics.
"NASA does not track UFOs," said Michael Cabbage, a NASA spokesman, in the CNN story. "NASA is not involved in any sort of cover-up about alien life on this planet or anywhere else – period."
