When you live on the driest populated continent on Earth, you have to use water wisely. Australian researchers have come up with a way to reduce water used during showers by a third, and all they did was add air.

Though the concept of an aerated shower is not a new one, the scientists developed a nozzle that fits into an existing shower head and fills the water droplets with tiny bubbles of air.

"The nozzle creates a vacuum that sucks in air and forces it into the water stream," explained Jie Wu, leader of the Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organization team that developed the device.

People who tested these "air showers" didn’t notice any didn’t notice any difference in water pressure or sensation from their normal showers, the research showed.

The scientists estimate the device could save more than 45,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of water if used in all Australian households.
