Big B Distributors, Inc., an Evansville, Ind., establishment, in cooperation with the FDA, is recalling approximately 5,160 pounds of burgoo soup because it is misbranded and contains an undeclared allergen. The product was prepared using a spice blend containing sodium caseinate, a milk protein and known allergen, which was not declared on the label, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The products subject to recall include:

  • 16-ounce jars of "MOONLITE BAR-B-Q BURGOO SOUP."
  • 32-ounce jars of "MOONLITE BAR-B-Q BURGOO SOUP."

The products subject to recall contain establishment number "EST. 1717" inside the USDA mark of inspection on the label. An identifying case code "2022141," "2022142," "2052171," or "2052172" appears on the lid of each jar. These products were produced on Feb. 24, 2011, and May 27, 2011, and were shipped to a distribution center in Kentucky. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on FSIS' website at www.fsis.usda.gov/FSIS_Recalls/Open_Federal_Cases/index.asp.

The problem was discovered by FSIS inspection personnel during a routine label review. At the time the product's label was approved by FSIS, sodium caseinate was not listed as a component of the spice blend. When the company began receiving the spice blend including sodium caseinate as an ingredient, the burgoo soup label was not changed to reflect the inclusion. FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and to ensure that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

Consumers and media with questions about the recall should contact the company's Vice President, Richard Bonenberger, at 812-425-5235, ext 115.
