» Vote Looming, A Live Debate Over Planet Definition Underway

A live discussion going on right now at an IAU meeting in Prauge (see blog below for background) over how to define planets suggests not all astronomers are ready to vote “yes” on a series of 4 resolutions.

IAU members who are at the meeting will be able to vote. But they are not all clear on what the resolutions actually mean. One question is how Pluto’s moon Charon fits in.
Regardless of how the vote goes, one of the meeting’s organizers admitted “there is confusion” over the status of Charon, Pluto’s moon.

It is also not clear whether a “dwarf planet” is actually a planet or not a planet. One astronomer also pointed out that even Earth is not perfectly round, so using roundness to define planets is somewhat ambiguous.

The proposals apply only to our solar system, an IAU official said. Originally the officials had hoped to define planets around all stars but “found it too difficult.”

The discussion is being webcasted here, if you can get in. Read the comments associated with this posting for my additional updates of the webcast.
