Although some rain and storms may dampen parts of the country this Memorial Day weekend, these five popular vacation spots highlighted below will have mostly sunny and warm weekends.

According to AAA, more than 36.1 million Americans are projected to travel 50 miles or more from home during the Memorial Day weekend, with the majority of travelers driving to their destinations. Overall, that is a 1.5 percent increase in travelers from last year.

Washington, D.C.

While many use the long Memorial Day weekend to serve as an unofficial kickoff to their summers, the holiday's origins are rooted in solemn remembrance. For those who wish to visit famous landmarks in Washington, D.C., the nation's capitol also has an array of events to partake in.

Sunday night at 8 p.m. EDT, the National Memorial Day Concert will be held on the lawn of the Capitol Building.

At 2 p.m. EDT on Monday, the Memorial Day Parade will begin on Constitution Ave.

Other events, such as services at the Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknowns, will be held in memoriam.

According to AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Jordan Root, Saturday will feature an afternoon shower or thunderstorm, but any rain should be spotty and highs will reach the upper 70s.

Sunday and Monday will have much clearer skies and temperatures in the low 80s.

San Diego

Like D.C.'s Arlington Cemetery, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego is a great destination for those looking to honor the fallen. A ceremony will be held at the cemetery at 10 a.m. PDT.

Other events include Legacy Week at the USS Midway Museum, which includes a Memorial Day ceremony, the American Freedom Festival Benefit Concert and a performance by the United States Navy Band.

Low morning clouds will yield to abundant sunshine each day this weekend. Highs will be in low to middle 70s.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

For those who are looking to spend Memorial Day weekend camping, the remaining roads into Yellowstone National Park and Bride Bay Campground will be opening this weekend.

A shower or thunderstorm will be around on Saturday, but Sunday and Monday will feature plenty of sunshine. Highs will be in the lower to mid-60s each day.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Many vacationers look to spend Memorial Day Weekend at the beach. Conditions at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, will be sunny and warm. Highs will be in the low to middle 80s each day, with Monday bringing an increase in mugginess.

This weekend will host the annual Hilton Head Island Art Festival. Events related to the holiday in the area include the Patriots and Planters guided tour of the Revolutionary War and the Hilton Head Choral Society's America Sings! celebratory choir concert.

Finger Lakes, New York

For water enthusiasts who prefer lakes to the ocean, New York's Finger Lakes region offers vacations and an array of activities.

For Memorial Day Weekend, military families and veterans receive free admission to the Discovery Trail in Ithaca. In Owego, New York, the Susquehanna River Big Splash Sustainability Fair will present music, art and exhibitions for attendees.

Wine tours are a main attraction across the Finger Lakes as well.

The weekend will start will a spotty shower or two and highs in the low 70s, but Sunday and Monday will be drier and sunnier. Temperatures will rise to near 80.
