For many years, Marlene Cimons was a Washington reporter for The Los Angeles Times covering health policy. These days, she writes for the National Science Foundation, Climate Nexus, Microbe magazine, The Washington Post health section, and has authored several health and science reports. She also is an adjunct professor of journalism at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, where she has been teaching since 2002. She earned a BA in journalism and political science from Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. in media studies from the University of Maryland. She is the mother of two adult children, four cats and a dog. An avid runner and swimmer, she lives in Bethesda, Md. Marlene contributes regularly to LiveScience’s Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights.
