How to Preserve a 460-Year-Old Shipwreck...
The chemical messages that pass between the billions of neurons in the human brain build the foundation for all thought, movement, and behavior.
The Synapse Revealed, by science illustrator Graham Johnson, tells the story of a neuron as it prepares to send a message to its target. This illustration is the first place winner in the illustration category in the 2005 Science Magazine and NSF Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge.
To create such an elegant drawing, Johnson based his work on several ultra-thin micrographs of sequential brain slices. With highly detailed shape and scale, this synaptic millisecond is as accurate as it is artful.
