The best drones

I love it when technology evolves from a purely commercial tech into a fantastic consumer product. Drones are now readily available, and utterly amazing to play around with. Drones offer you a way to see the world from a completely new perspective, and for that, they are worth their weight in gold.

Best overall

DJI Mavic Mini

No permit needed

DJI has dominated the consumer drone space for several years now, but with drones now requiring a permit to fly DJI has had to make new innovations.

Weighing in at just 249 grams — exactly 1 gram under the weight needed for a permit — but packing a 12 megapixel camera and 2K video, the Mavic Mini is perfect for your first proper drone.

Best for kids

Great for young people and beginners

This is an extremely stripped down drone for beginners and young kids. The drone comes with an extra battery to increase your flight time and one-touch takeoff and landing.

The takeoff and landing are the most important parts of flying as you tend to crash quickly wehn learning. Being able to press a button and have the drone launch is a godsend.

Greatness on a budget

If you are looking to spend a little less but still want stunning visuals then the Holy Stone HS720 may be the right drone for you. It comes with 4K video capabilities, GPS assisted flight, and a 26 minute flight time.

The drone s also designed to come back to a predetermined GPS location if the battery is dying, or it loses signal. This drops the chances of you losing it considerably. You get all of the features of a high-end drone for a fraction of the cost.

Bigger for less

There are plenty of reasons to get a larger drone —stability being the chief reason — and the Holy Stone HS700d offers a lot for the money. The camera on the Holy Stone allows for 2K video, which may not be the big 4K, but is enough to give you crisp clear visuals on just about any device or TV.

It also has the ability to fly a predetermined route, as well one of my favorites tricks; GPS follow. That means the drone will follow you with the camera focused on you as you move around.

Best visuals

Mavic Air 2

Mavic Air 2

Take your video to the next level

The Mavic Air 2 is the pinnacle of consumer drone technology right now. With a massive 48 megapixel camera that can produce 8K video, the Mavic Air 2 is going to give the very best visual experience. The only reason this superb machine isn't our top pick is that you'll need a permit to fly it.

Stop droning on

So what drone would I buy with my money? Right now, the Mavic Mini is my favorite little drone, with the Mavic Air 2 being the very best drone you can buy. The Mavic Air 2 is an almost perfect machine in my mind, offering commercial grade visuals in a consumer package. The Mini wins the top slot for me simply because of ease. I don't need to get a permit or carry around a large unit. It's perfect for my needs and has a respectable 2.7K camera to offer stunning photos and videos.

If you are looking for something a little cheaper, but that can still pack a punch you should try the Holy Stone HS720. It's roughly the same size as the Mavic air but costs much less. Of course, you sacrifice some features for the price drop but not so many as to make it unusable. It's actually a pretty good drone for the price.
