Earthquake Strikes Off Indonesia

An offshore earthquake of preliminary magnitude 6.7 struck today south of the Indonesian island of Java, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The temblor's epicenter was 106 miles (170 km) east-northeast of Flying Fish Cove, Christmas Island, and 263 miles (23km) south of Jakarta, Indonesia. It originated 6.9 miles (11.1 km) deep and struck at 11:47 p.m. local time (16:47 UTC), the USGS reports.
