Rome Can Be Built in a Day

It took nearly a decade to build the Colosseum, and almost a century to construct St. Peter's Basilica. But now with the help of loads of tourist photos and some fancy new software, these landmarks and the rest of Rome can be digitized in about a day.

A new computer algorithm developed at the University of Washington uses hundreds of thousands of tourist photos to automatically reconstruct an entire city in a matter of hours. The result is a 3-D view of landmarks, created by stitching together photos from various angles.
