Space-Time Distortions Uncover Hidden Galaxies

This diagram illustrates a cosmic phenomenon known as gravitational lensing, in which the light from a distant galaxy is warped and magnified by the presence of a foreground galaxy. The Herschel Space has discovered five new these distant "lensed" galaxies, and the image illustrates one of these five events. The foreground galaxy (blue) is seen by optical telescopes, while the light from the background galaxy (red) is observed as a distorted image (pink) by far-infrared and sub-millimeter telescopes.

Previously hidden behind veils of dust, ancient galaxies have been detected using an effect caused by the space-time distortions in the vast distance between those galaxies and Earth.

The discovery of the distant galaxies could shed light on formation of the early universe and galaxies, researchers said. [New photo of the ancient galaxies]
