Strong Earthquake Strikes in Chile

An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 6.1 struck today in Chile, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The temblor's epicenter was 51 miles (82 km) southwest of Vallenar, Chile, and 298 miles (480 km) north of Santiago. It originated 38 miles (61 km) deep and struck at 4:02 p.m. local time (1902 UTC), the USGS reports.
