Early sailors learned that eating dried cranberries was an excellent source of vitamin C and greatly helped to prevent scurvy. The berries are high in antioxidants and are thought to be beneficial to help prevent urinary tract infections. During the Thanksgiving season alone, the producers of cranberries report that 74 percent of all American homes will serve over 5 million gallons (19 million liters) of jellied cranberry sauce during their Thanksgiving Day meal. The wild, little berry from the wetlands of North America continues to be a significant and healthy part of holiday family celebrations.
