As sports drinks and energy drinks have become more popular, a related problem has emerged: The drinks cause irreversible damage to teeth, a new study finds.

Researchers are concerned because the drinks are popular among adolescents. High acidity levels in the drinks erode tooth enamel, which is the shiny, protective outer layer of teeth, the study shows. The results are detailed in the May/June 2012 issue of General Dentistry, the journal of the Academy of General Dentistry.
