He has expertise in wildlife ecology, conservation and management, and is particularly interested in the ecology of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. He also studies dispersal and movements by individual animals. He earned a doctoral degree from the University of Alberta and a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Victoria in Vancouver, B.C.
