On May 1, 1921, the USS Conestoga made front page news in the San Francisco Chronicle with the headline "Pacific Fleet Tug and Its Crew of Thirty Missing."

In September 2014, the NOAA research vessel Fulmar set out on a maritime heritage expedition. During that trip a Phantom HD2 remotely operated vehicle (ROV) explored the "mystery tug" on the sea bottom, later identified as the USS Conestoga.

Cyril Poissonnet, Teledyne SeaBotix's operator, launches an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) off the stern of the research vessel Fulmar during an October 2015 expedition to the USS Conestoga shipwreck. The company also recorded video inside parts of the shipwreck using a small remotely operated vehicle (ROV).
