An eight-person group of bartenders set a new Guinness World Record for the most cocktails made in one hour by a team, making more than 1,500 alcoholic drinks.
The event, held on Feb. 27 at the ACE Hotel in New York and supported by the U.S. Bartenders' Guild, brought together some of the best and fastest bartenders in the United States. The bartending team had to whip up more than 937 cocktails in under an hour to beat the previous Guinness World Record .
Guinness guidelines state that a bartending team must consist of two to eight people, and that each drink must contain at least three separate ingredients, one of which must be alcoholic. Since the latest record-setting event was sponsored by 42Below vodka, all of the drinks were vodka-based and included one of the brand's four flavors pure, honey, kiwi, and passion fruit.
Because no bartender was allowed to make an individual drink more than once, the team's cocktail itinerary started out relatively simple but became progressively more complicated as the hour wore on. Vodka martinis, for example, made way for vodka cucumber dill gimlets.
Each of the eight bartenders had an independent witness to check that their alcoholic concoctions were made using the correct ingredients and ratio before marking the drink as counting towards the record total. The final number came out to 1,541 cocktails which averaged out to almost 193 drinks per bartender, or approximately 19 seconds spent making each drink.
