Multimeters are used by homeowners, DIYers, and commercial Electricians alike. Each model is a little different and offers different things to different people. For example, I used mine to test the outlets in my home when I had them rewired, but my kid used it to measure the electrical output of a lemon for his science project.

We have pulled together a list of our favorite multimeters. Each one has some unique selling point that makes it worth your time so you'll need to know what the job you want to accomplish is before choosing.

Best overall

AstroAI Digital Multimeter TRMS 6000

The perfect balance of price and quality

The Astro AI TRMS is the perfect multimeter for those who need a lot of functionality at a good price. It's designed to be easy to use, yet house professional perks like true RMS testing for AC current.

I really like the simple additions of a magnet on the back to hold it in place when you are working, and the more safety-conscious fuses built into the multimeter to stop it bursting if too much current runs through it.

Less invasive

The clamp is pretty big

Being able to test the voltage of a wire under load without having to cut it can be incredibly helpful in a commercial setting. This multimeter has a clamp that fits a conductor up to 26mm (1-inch).

Of course, it also has all of the other important features of a multimeter, such as AC/DC Voltage, diode, continuity, and resistance testing, with the added addition of AC voltage through the hook.

Everything you need at home

This multimeter is very similar to our best overall pick but sacrifices some utility for a much lower price.

It still measures AC/DC Voltage, DC Current — though not AC current — resistance, continuity, and diodes, things like true RMS are not available. If you are looking for something small and budget-friendly then this is the one for you.

Commercial grade

Fluke 115 true RMS multimeter

Fluke 115 Compact True-RMS Digital Multimeter

This is the high-end choice

With a CAT III 600 V safety rating, the Fluke 115 compact is a commercial-grade, true RMS multimeter that is known for its accuracy and reliability.

The Fluke is a little pricier than other options on this list but it is the most comprehensive on the list too. If you are working with electrics all day, then you need something you know is going to do the job. Sometimes, you get what you pay for.

All-in-one package

Get all the testing!

The Klein Tools multimeter is more than just one tool. It comes with a bevy of extra parts to help you troubleshoot most electrical issues you may come across.

Not only does the Klein Tool come with a clamp meter that measures AC current via the clamp, but it also has extras like a CGFI meter to check faults on your system. The CGFI meter makes it easy to find out if each of your wall sockets is wired correctly.

Multiple choices

Multimeters are specifically designed to offer you a choice in the type of testing you are doing. Whether you are using it at home or a commercial electrical tester, a good multimeter will help you solve problems and save money. We recommend the  AstroAI Digital Multimeter TRMS 6000 for that perfect balance of advanced features with a reasonable price tag.

If you really need an even more well-rounded package then the Klein Tools multimeter offers a lot of different tests that most of the multimeters on this list don't, including a nifty CGFI testing unit.
