X-Flare Close-up - NASA IRIS Mission Picks Right Sunspot | Video

NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) mission can only study small areas of the Sun's surface at a time. This week’s mission planner pointed the probe at promising sunspot AR2158 just in time for an X1.6-class flare. 
 
 
Searing plasma "lines" spark and shift at several hundred miles per hour during the flare.
