Seawater May Someday Power Jets

The world’s oceans just might be one of the largest untapped energy sources out there.
But that may someday change as U.S. Navy scientists have worked out a process to turn seawater into “unsaturated short-chain hydrocarbons,” which can be further refined to make kerosene-based jet fuel, New Scientist reports.
Researchers are currently exploring a whole host of ideas for generating clean energy, including converting beer, fungus and even shrimp into fuel.
The seas, however, can provide vast amounts of energy (at least for airplanes), but only if scientists can figure out how to produce hydrocarbons without generating methane as a byproduct, which is the next step towards making “ocean power” a reality.
