In the more than 50 years since the launch of Sputnik 1, humans have sent a barrage of probes out into our cosmic neighbor hood, from our own moon to the edge of the solar system.

National Geographic has plotted out all of these missions on this interactive map. Each line represents a different mission, which notable missions labeled. The number of missions to each planet is also noted -- Venus has racked up three more missions than Mars and the number of loops around these two planets is far more than those further out in the solar system.

The most recent mission in space is the LCROSS probe, which slammed into the moon last week, looking for signs of water ice in permanently shadowed craters at the lunar south pole.
