A gecko running up a vertical surface hits a slippery patch that causes it to pitch backwards. In response, its tail acts like a bicycle kickstand to keep it on the wall. In the last panel, RiSE (Robot in Scansorial Environment), a bio-inspired robot, will use an active tail as an emergency fifth limb to assist in climbing.
