The dendrobates galactonotus is one of 5,743 known species of amphibians, 32.5 percent of which are currently threatened and up to 122 species have been facing extinction since 1980.
Amphibian extinction is caused in part by land-use change, commercial overexploitation, and the infectious disease caused by fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis.
Amphibian species may possess untapped potential for advances in biomedicine.
