Outer Space? Chicken Feathers!...
Rosemary, lavender, scented geraniums and salvia take center stage this week, as the National Herb Garden begins a six-month celebration of its 25th anniversary.
Organizers have planned special events and lectures that will demonstrate the central role that herbs have played in various cultures.
The 2.5-acre herb garden, located in the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., was dedicated in May 1980, as a gift from the Herb Society of America.
The landscape architect Tom Wirth designed the site to include hundreds of annual, perennial and woody herbal plants. Each year, the staff grows about 60 to 90 varieties of peppers.
The picture above is of the Knot Garden, which is named for the layout of its evergreen shrubs.
