Politician Nixes HIV/AIDS Studies

Representative Darrell Issa (R–CA) insisted three federal grants for studies designed to better understand the spread of HIV/AIDS by studying sex workers and drug abusers were money wasted. The grants, administered by the National Institutes of Health, have been nixed from a bill, ScienceNow reports.
The grants had all been approved by a scientific peer review process.
Patrick White of the Association of American Universities in Washington, D.C. called the micromanaging and second-guessing of NIH funding by politicians "a terrible precedent."
