Henry Allingham, a WWI vet, held the title for just a few weeks, gaining it last month when Tomoji Tanabe died. Both men made it to 113, according to Guiness World Records.

In May, the world's oldest woman slipped on the bathroom floor of an apartment that the state had given her because of her great age. She died at 130.

On average, women outlive men. Unfortunately, women suffer more ills as they age, too.

There are about 80,000 centenarians in the United States. Odds are most won't live much longer, however. Only about 1-in-1,000 people who make it to age 100 live to be 110. And only 1-in-100,000 of these go on to be 115.

Allingham jokingly attributed his long life to "cigarettes, whisky and wild, wild women," The Telegraph reports.
