Scotch Goes Green

posted: 18 June 2009 04:42 pm ET

Scotch whiskey distilleries are joining the ranks of businesses that are going green.

WWF International reports that the Scotch Whiskey Association (a consortium of Scottish distillers) has pledged to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050. That's the equivalent of taking 235,00 cars off the country's roads. They also plan to use their post distillation liquids for heat generation and renewable energy sources.

Scotch whiskies are whiskies specifically made in Scotland. The distillers agreeing to reduce emissions note that the subtle flavors of the liquid are often imparted by the environment in which they are made, depending on clean water and good cereal grains.

Scotch isn't the only alcohol going green. Some breweries produce organic beers, and a few vintners are looking to lessen the carbon footprint of their wine production processes.
