Recession Hits Religions

A lack of funds owing to the Great Recession could bring many congregations to their financial knees, researchers say. The problem is exaccerbated by the rending of social ties caused by so many people losing jobs and homes, causing moves across town or back to the old hometown. As many at 15 percent of the roughly 320,000 to 350,000 U.S. congregations are in "serious financial trouble."
