The 'Belief Gap'

Last week we told you about the survey of U.S. residents that found they don't dig scientists as much as they did in the past.

But there was more to this extensive survey of scientists and non-scientist U.S. residents. One other compelling result suggests a belief gap, USA Today reports.

Some 55 percent of adults said science and religion are often in conflict, and 36 percent said science sometimes conflicts with their own religious beliefs. Among that latter group, 41 percent cited evolution, creationism, Darwinism and debates about the origin of life as the specific conflicts.

While science and religion can meet at debate flashpoints, many scientists say it need not be so. In fact many scientists believe in God — 40 percent according to one poll.
