Interracial Roommates Reduce Prejudice

The New York Times reports that several recent studies find the rather expected: "having a roommate of a different race can reduce prejudice" and diversify friendships. Perhaps more surprising, the studies show, such setups can also boost black students' academic performance, because black students feel compelled to push themselves to challenge the stereotype that they are not that smart, one black student interviewed for the article said. The more subtle finding in the studies: Such interracial relationships "are more stressful and more likely to break up than same-race pairings."
