It was the book 'The Mayan Factor' that first introduced me to the year 2012. For this reason, I was excited to meet the author, Jose Arquelles, who a few years back visited Evergreen College, in Olympia, WA.
What struck me most about Jose Arquelles, came during his introduction, when the audience clapped, and in turn he responded with, "Don't applaud me; applaud yourselves."
Ourselves, or the self cycle, is what I believe is significant, when the Mayan Calender completes its measure in 2012. The world begins and ends each day, with the birth of one, and the passing-on, of another. Gnostics symbolized the self cycle, as a circled snake eating its own tail.
Cycles can be defined by destruction, completion, or renewel, depending on one's preception. December 21, 2012 will come, but until then, the self cycle should each day, applaud itself.
