My five-year-old son and I tried on three different evenings to spot Comet McNaught from our home here north of Phoenix.
We tried the upstairs window one evening, various high-ground locations another, and finally drove out to the edge of town last evening, watched the Sun set behind distant mountains with nothing but desert in the foreground. Venus appeared, the comet did not. I think my son has stopped believing in comets.
But this morning… Wow! I love armchair astronomy. McNaught has entered the field of view of the SOHO spacecraft, and the initial look is fantastic. I’m waiting for him to wake up so I can show him I’m not nuts. Watching the animation through the weekend, on the Internet, will go down as one of the great popular astronomy events of all time.
