“We’re good to go!” That’s the word from John Carmack, head rocketeer of Armadillo Aerospace. Carmack and his team are ready to give it another shot in attempting to win a Lunar Lander Challenger prize.
On Friday, Armadillo’s vehicle flew successfully, but landed too hard causing damage to the vehicle.
Carmack told SPACE.com that overnight they transferred hardware from a complimentary craft, fixing issues caused by the hard landing of their “Pixel” vertical takeoff and landing hardware. New software onboard should allow a slower descent of the hardware to a landing pad.
New landing legs were fitted to Pixel. Other hardware was transferred from the other craft to Pixel - including older chamber equipment that’s got some small cracks but ready to fly.
It’s clear here this morning in Las Cruces, site of the Wirefly X Prize Cup. Armadillo’s team has rolled out Pixel to start the process that will lead to a Level 1 attempt to win NASA prize money. If all goes well, Carmack said his craft may go for the Level 2 money - a more challenging mission.
If that’s not possible, Carmack said they are going to try and beat the time in the air mark of the DC-X vertical takeoff and landing vehicle sponsored years ago by NASA and the Defense Department.
Keep up with the action at the Wirefly X Prize Cup site.
