Armadillo Aerospace appears to have successfully lofted its Lunar Lander Challenge rocket on its first leg of a two-step vertical takeoff and landing contest at the Wirefly X Prize Cup held here at Las Cruces, New Mexico.
The vehicle rose high above desert landscape, hovered high in the air, then moved over to another landing spot. Initial reports suggest all went well.
The vehicle is now being refueld for a repeat performance as part of a a Level 1 contest to win a $350,000 prize purse.
