At only 3 feet in length, these relatively small nocturnal sharks are found near the coasts of California to Chile. When threatened, swell sharks bend their bodies into a U-shape, grab their caudal fins in their mouths and swallow large volumes of seawater. This puffs them up to twice their normal size, making it difficult for predators to drag them out from the rocky crevices where they live.
