The Strangest Animal Discoveries of 2006
Just as Atlantans speak a little differently than New Yorkers, whales of the same species that live in different parts of the ocean "speak" in different dialects. Scientists listening to whale song discovered that these different populations use varying combinations of pulses, tones, and pitches to communicate with each other, though the researchers are unsure why. Whales were also found to combine these sounds into phrases governed by complex grammatical rules, though their lyrical songs don't actually constitute a language.
