Herd of "River Horses"

Say “AHHHHH…” A male hippopotamus displays in the lower Luangua River in Zambia, home to the largest population of these ponderous beasts.

Its name translates in Greek to “river horse,” which is apropos since hippos literally live in the water, venturing ashore primarily at night to feed on riverside vegetation.

The Wildlife Conservation Society has targeted conservation of hippos and other wildlife in Zambia through its COMACO (Community Markets for Conservation) program, where one-time poachers receive training in organic farming, carpentry and bee-keeping.
