Meet George, King of the Zoo
Editor's Note: This new series of wildlife photographs, updated each Friday, can be found in LiveScience's Animal Domain section.
This crested gecko is from the Bronx Zoo's World of Reptiles. Native to New Caledonia, the crested gecko was thought to be extinct until scientists rediscovered it in the late 1980s. This docile reptile has no eyelids, though its eyes are topped with tiny points that look like eyelashes. It keeps its eyes clean using its tongue.
