George, a lion residing at the African Plains exhibit at the Bronx Zoo, surveys his suuroundings. The Bronx Zoo's parent organization, the Wildlife Conservation Society, is helping to protect the "king of beasts" in the wild, where a combination of poaching, persecution and habitat loss has led to a precipitous decline in lion numbers over the past several decades.  WCS is working with a variety of local partners to help save these emblematic big cats, so they can continue to roam Africa's savannas as they have for thousands of years.
