This tiger was recently photographed by the Wildlife Conservation Society using a remote infrared camera trap in the Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area in northern Laos.

Researchers use camera traps to monitor populations of tigers and many other species of wildlife.  In the case of tigers, camera traps allow researchers to count local populations, since the stripe pattern on each individual animal is unique.

WCS researchers believe this particular animal is a male and an older individual, as evidenced by the broken canine tooth visible in the photograph.
