For some, it can feel like it takes an army to keep their house and office organized.
Knowing what a chore that can be, 18-year U.S. Air Force veteran Angela Cody-Rouget has put her military background to good use by launching Major Mom, a professional organization service.
Cody-Rouget and the rest of her troops work with clients to set up customizable and sustainable organization systems for their home, office or car. Specific services include residential and office organizing, downsizing and merging-households assistance, and family- and time-management help.
Cody-Rouget's nearly two decades in the military — and being drilled on the importance of keeping an orderly environment — gave her unique insight into how people flourish more in an orderly environment. She said the most important skill she learned that helped her start Major Mom was the ability to utilize and create checklists and operations manuals to ensure mission accomplishment.
"This has been important because I have now created a Job Organizing Checklist, training manuals, Rules of Engagement, Ops Manuals for HR and Accounting, and many other checklists and job aides to make life easier for everyone," Cody-Rouget told BusinessNewsDaily."All of these documents have also been created to ensure a consistent standard of client care and to help make our mission more successful."
Many families may think they can get organized on their own, but Cody-Rouget believes there are often too many roadblocks in their way, including a lack of organization skills.
"Organizing is not a natural skill for most people," she said, adding that many people confuse organizing with cleaning.
Based in Colorado, Major Mom currently offers its services in Denver, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs, Colo., as well as in Spokane, Wash., and has plans for new locations in Houston and Austin, Texas, and Phoenix. Major Mom also offers monthly online workshops for those not in the company's coverage area.
Cody-Rouget said the tip that resonates most with her clients is to stop bringing unnecessary things into your home or office.
"We get very specific by saying, 'Stop shopping; don't go to garage sales; cancel subscriptions to magazines you don't read; don't buy it because it is on sale; don't buy 10 because they're on sale'," Cody-Rouget said. "We urge them to get off of the hyperconsumerism bandwagon."
