Numerous ice boulders have been found on the shore of Lake Michigan. Some estimates state the ice balls weighed up to 70 pounds. These form when large chunks of the ice from Lake Michigan break off, growing layer by layer. As the growing chunks are tossed by waves they eventually form smooth, rounded balls which then wash up along the shores.
