The Chicken Or The Egg?

It has perplexed humanity from as early as the Ancient Greeks. So which came first, the chicken or the egg? Research suggests that chicken eggs have a particular protein in the shell that could only be created by a chicken.  However, it's also possible that an early type of chicken, perhaps a proto-chicken, could have created an egg with a mutation that - over several thousand years - evolved into our modern version of a chicken.
