This image, which is of a soft-bodied mollusk known as a nudibranch, earned Nicholas Samaras third place in a student underwater photography contest run by the University of Miami's Rosensteil School of Marine & Atmospheric Science. Samaras took the photo in the waters off Chalkidiki, Greece. The mollusks are known for their striking colors and shapes. This particular species of nudibranch, Cratena peregrina, lives in the Mediterranean. While the nudibranch are small and soft, they are carnivores and prefer to eat marine sponges.
