This 36-year-old Asian elephant likes to play the harmonica. Shanthi lives at the Smithsonian's National Zoo and was given the instrument after her handlers noticed she was using her trunk to make sounds. Studies have found that animals often respond positively to music, sometimes by swaying in time to the beat. Dogs have been found to respond to classical music as a calming method and it has even been used to soothe the animals during canine seizures. Musical elephant Shanthi doesn't just play well-known songs; she sometimes makes up her own ditties, according to the zoo.
