If you’re making some changes to your home…like remodeling or upgrading your heating or cooling system…there are lots of ways to make your home more green and energy efficient, which can reduce your energy bill…but since most people don’t have a lot of experience remodeling, your choice of contractors is the most important choice you’ll make. A good one is like a Prince! Or Princess! A contractor that’s a Certified Green Professional will use the National Green Building Standard that’s been set by the National Association of Home Builders. So locate at least three of the best contractors you can find and then check them out thoroughly: look at their state licenses, current insurance, general liability, and workers comp. Talk to their previous customers to give you a feel for their efficiency, timeliness, and trustworthiness… and checking to see if they’re listed with the home builders association will tell you about their professionalism. Their bids should spell out exactly what work will be done, when it will be done, how much money you’ll pay for it, and when you’ll pay. (By the way, keep records of every interaction, don’t ever pay in cash, and if there are changes that are made along the way, get them in writing.) …And if you’ve done all the right investigation, examination, and preparation… you may just find…The Contractor Prince! Or Princess!

Changing your home to include energy efficient systems and materials can save you some real money, but remodeling can pose some real problems if you don't have a terrific general contractor to get the job done.
