grand opening featured an appearance by writer Alexander McCall Smith, who wrote the script to "Meerkats: The Movie," a 2008 British feature-length film about meerkats in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa.

"Meerkats are extremely charismatic and inquisitive animals, making them extremely popular with our visitors," Chris West, chief executive officer for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, which owns and operates the Edinburgh Zoo, said in a statement.
